A 120 by 180 cm cotton flatweave rug weighs about 3 kilograms dry. Soaked, it can weigh 12 or more, which is why people who throw one into a small home washer often hear the drum bang, see a red error light and end up hauling a dripping rug to the bathtub. Most of these rugs are easy to wash. You just have to pick the right method for the size before the water goes in.

This is how to wash a cotton flatweave rug, kilim style weave or rag rug at home for the price of a little detergent, and how to avoid the three mistakes that shrink, fade or warp them: hot water, a tumble dryer, and drying them folded. I have washed every flat rug in our house this way for years, including two that the shop insisted were dry clean only.

Check the Label and the Backing First

Turn the rug over and find the care tag, usually sewn into one corner. Three things decide whether this guide applies to you:

  • Fiber. Cotton, recycled cotton and cotton blends wash well. Wool flatweaves need a gentler approach, which I cover in caring for a wool rug on a budget. Jute and sisal should not be soaked at all.
  • Backing. A latex or rubber anti slip backing breaks down in a washing machine, especially in warm water. If the back feels rubbery or has a waffle texture, hand wash it or spot clean only.
  • Fringe. Knotted fringe tangles in a machine. It survives if you protect it, which I will come back to.

No tag at all? Rub a damp white cloth on a dark section. If color transfers, wash the rug alone in cold water and expect some bleeding.

Machine, Laundromat or Bathtub

Size decides the method. A standard 7 to 8 kilogram front loading washer handles more than people think, but not everything.

Top loaders with a central agitator are rough on rugs and can wrap them around the post. If that is what you have, use the laundromat or the tub instead.

How to Wash a Cotton Flatweave Rug in the Machine

Before it goes in, take the rug outside and shake it hard, then vacuum both sides. Grit trapped in the weave turns into sandpaper in the wash and wears the fibers.

  1. Roll the rug loosely, not folded, and put it in the drum. Rolling spreads the weight more evenly.
  2. If it has fringe, tuck it inside the roll or put each end in a pillowcase tied with a hair tie.
  3. Add two old towels to balance the load if the rug is small.
  4. Use a cold or 30 degree setting, delicate or wool cycle, and half the usual amount of mild liquid detergent.
  5. Pick the lowest spin speed, around 400 to 600 rpm. A high spin can stretch the weave out of square.

Skip fabric softener. It leaves a coating that attracts dirt faster, and on a floor item that defeats the point of washing it.

The Bathtub Method for Big Rugs

For anything too large for a machine, the tub works well and costs nothing extra. Fill it with a few inches of cool water and a capful of mild detergent, then lay the rug in, folding it to fit.

Walk on it barefoot for a few minutes, the same way grapes used to be pressed. It sounds silly and it is far more effective than scrubbing by hand. Drain, refill with clean water, and repeat until the water stays mostly clear, usually two or three rinses.

To get water out, drain the tub fully, press the rug against the bottom with your feet, then roll it tightly and stand on the roll. Leave it draped over the tub edge for an hour so the worst of the water drips out before you move it.

Why You Should Not Use Hot Water to Kill Germs

A lot of cleaning advice says to wash floor textiles hot to sanitize them. For cotton flatweaves, that is the fastest way to ruin one. Cotton shrinks most in heat, and a flatweave shrinks unevenly because the warp and weft threads are under different tension. You end up with a rug that is smaller and no longer lies flat.

Hot water also pulls dye out of cotton, especially the reds and indigo blues common on these rugs. If you are worried about bacteria, a cold wash with detergent removes most of it, and drying in sunlight does a good share of the rest. For pet accidents, treat the spot with an enzyme cleaner before washing instead of turning up the heat.

Drying Without Shrinking or Warping

Never put a flatweave rug in a tumble dryer, even on low. The heat and the tumbling together cause the worst shrinkage and can tear fringe.

  • Dry it flat if you can, on a clean patio, a drying rack or over two chairs with a towel between them.
  • If you must hang it, drape it over a line with the weight split evenly on both sides, and turn it every few hours.
  • Gently pull the edges straight while it is still damp. This is when you can correct any stretching.
  • Avoid strong direct sun for more than a few hours if the colors are bright, since it can fade them.

A cotton rug can take 24 to 48 hours to dry fully indoors. Do not put it back on the floor while the center is still damp, or you risk mildew and a musty smell. A fan speeds things up, and many of the tricks from how to dry a wet carpet fast work on rugs too.

How Often a Flat Rug Needs Washing

Flatweaves trap less dirt than pile rugs, so they need washing less often than you might expect. A kitchen or entryway rug often benefits from a wash every two to three months. A bedroom rug can go six months or more with regular vacuuming.

Shake it outside every week or two. That alone removes most of the grit and stretches the time between washes. Rotating the rug every few months also evens out wear and fading near windows.

FAQ

Can I wash a rug with a rubber backing?

Only by hand, in cool water, and even then the backing may crack over time. Many people remove the rug from a separate rug pad instead, wash the rug, and replace the pad when it wears out.

Why did my rug come out of the wash curled at the edges?

The edges were binding tighter than the center as it dried. Lay it flat while damp, pull the edges gently into shape, and set a few heavy books along the curled corners overnight.

Is it worth paying a cleaner for a cotton flatweave?

Rarely. These rugs wash well at home, and professional cleaning for a mid sized rug often costs 40 to 80 dollars. Save that budget for wool, silk or antique pieces.

Your Next Wash Day

Measure the rug, check for rubber backing, and choose the washer, laundromat or tub based on size. Wash cold with a little mild detergent, spin low, dry flat and straighten the edges while it is damp. That routine keeps a cheap cotton rug looking new for years, and it costs less than a coffee each time.
